The Sunflower

No one prepares us to be parents, you can babysit your life away, change 5000 diapers and be the teacher of the year- but when you hold your own child for the first time, the world changes. When you become a wife and a mother within four months time, you try so hard to satisfy both new elements that you get lost. No one prepares you to be a wife, especially when you are the child of divorced parents.

So, you stumble along trying to do the best you can, because all you feel is love and sleep-deprivation. Then, slam, just when you see the light and have it all just about balanced, your road is chosen for you and you follow it. The road takes over and dictates and dominates until it swallows you completely.

You hug curves, drop your stomach at the dips, do 200 mph in a 25 mph zone or 25mph on the highway- it's all about the road. Until one day you find traintracks along the road, so you stop. And in that one moment, that one fleeting moment, you spy a teeny, tiny sunflower by the side of the road and you are dying to get out of that car that you have been sitting in - always in the driver's seat- not to pick the flower...just to smell it.

So I did.

You know Jodi, you are so far away -- and yet every time I read a post, I hear your voice. I can see your face and see you speaking the words out loud. It gives me great comfort and joy. Comfort because I feel like you are just around the corner and we can have a glass of wine at a moment's notice -- and joy because you are a woman who knows who she is. We're all still figuring it out day to day -- but you know your voice and who you are! Brava!!!! xoxo

I totally agree with Debbie's comment. Your words are very inspiring and you seem very comfortable in your skin which is a wonderful atribute that many women do not have. I am still learning. I happened upon your site looking for "Deaf community of Tuscany" for a project I am working on in my ASL II class. I read Jordan's story and felt compelled to write. Is there a large Deaf community in Tuscany and is the Siena School located there? My project is a vacation brochure which highlights the Deaf culture, cost of items/events in the area, transportation, census, including how many people are in the area and accommodations available for the deaf. I would appreciate any information if possible. My dream one day is to visit Italy, especially Tuscany. I am Italian, but do not speak the language(next language to learn). I added your link to my favorites and I am also on facebook as well. Thanks and may you and your family be blessed in the New Year.

youDebbie...
I love you- you have no idea how much I love reading your comments- thank you...
Roseann,
Hi!! Nice to meet you!! I'm not involved with the Deaf Community here, it isn't very large but it does exist. There's a fullbright scholar who's coming in a couple of weeks and she's staying at the Siena school. I could probably get some information from her once she arrives...but it will take time. Email me in any case- and click me on fb

Thanks Jodi for replying to my comment. I really appreciate it. That would be great if you can find out that info for me. My project is not due until April, but I like to get a head start on things if I can. I really appreciate any information you can get for me. Have a great day and a wonderful New Year. Look forward to reading more of your posts.

Thank you Sharon for the information. I went to the website link you provided but there is no email address for Debra Cole. I found the Siena School's website prior to finding Jodi's wonderful website and retrieved some info. That would be great if you could give her my email address so I could obtain further info about Deaf culture in Siena. Thanks again and have a wonderful New Year.
