The Time is Now

Having the time of my life...for now, enjoy this one!

*Despite the fact that this video was posted with permission, it was done so "in the heat of passion." Because Hands and Voices is exactly that...it would be inappropriate to leave the video here without captions. Therefore, the video has been removed by request...and here, I honor requests. Thank you for your understanding*

You are back!! to deafread. Oh I miss you... you are one of my favorite few CI blogs. I am not too fond about CI but that doesn't make me steer away from them. I am not against CI-ers. I am not crazy how CI companies control. And the CI-er militants.

I am a little disappointed to see you departed from deafread. Tayler and his team has nothing to do with prejudice. It is unfortunately to see the people jumping on bandwagon.

On bright side, I am past that... over the issues. It s their decision. If you don't plan to be on deafread, no big deal....ur decision I must have you on my RSS feed!!! I really enjoy you and your Jordan.

Just want to say that you truly are MISSED. I bet that I am not only one.

oh oh oh excellent video!!!! LOVE IT!!

Why no picture of Dr. Davila?
Why show a picture of Mr. I. King
Jordan, a man who is hostile toward deaf pple!?

Try to guess which one is me, my husband Uzi, and our son Yoel. The last shot is our..you go figure. : )

I recall seeing that film after the release, it was close captioned. Oh well...I admire your sense of humor.

Actually everyone in this film is signing - speaking the same line.

I know almost everyone in this film, one is my professor Dr. Brenda Schick, and another one is Dr. Christina Itano-Yoshinaga who is on my dissertation committee. Most ones are Deaf, Hoh, and hearing family members in Colorado, almost all of them sign that for we are really grateful to be able to enjoy this great community of people who most of us can have eye to eye, heart to heart conversation through signing.

This film was produced in 2004 - 2005 by Leanne Seaver, the mother of her hard hearing son shown on the first shot of the film. She was clueless about the ex Gally prez, that's one thing for sure, but notice that AGB is also one of figures. The point of this footage is how our history has evolved under leadership and technology.

Whether we like these guys, they have a huge impact on us. However I validate your view, I share the same here, I worked for Gally during King's time, you are right.

The fact the video is not captioned, so I don't understand the cuing or the talking without signing (someone suggested that was an attempt at humor/irony....maybe...), I still don't get the point of the video. What is the idea? Why is the time now for this idea, whatever it is?

Anonymous said...

That should have been, "the fact....aside, I still don't...

Leanne Seaver who produced this film is a long time advocate and activist of Deaf and Hoh children in this state. She happens to have her own business in film production and produced this footage for public awareness purpose.

If you see problems with this film, say it so. LeAnne is open, she will hear you and maybe will try to produce a second awareness film. Just point out what confuse you, what you would like to see in the next film.

Put open captions STUPID!

Hi AM,

The whole film is confusing. It is not clear what it is advocating for. What is the "idea" that the "time has come for"? Why is the idea's time "now"? What makes it more confusing is seeing cued speechers, ASL users, oralists, etc. Very different people, different philosophies. So what is the idea?

Unknown said...

It advocates inclusiveness.

While LeAnne and everyone here supports signing, I am ok with it. I really am for dual language concept with cued speech as a tool for English literacy development and classroom use. Research and users I know show great results however I personally have to say, pleeeeeeease! enough enough of us turning into a tower of babel. Most Deaf community members do not really want to see cued speech like SEE, People Sign Language etc becoming prevalent, it becomes pretty messy when it comes to the community level discourse..interpreters and costs when dual language, just two of them with their own wealth of linguistics and pragmatics make most sense, for resources, economy, and honestly..very basic human rights of a very low numbered people with hearing loss trying to live together.

That was my initial reaction and still my feeling when seeing this film, especially myself with my family being in there. It is not what we really want when it comes to artificial, invented modes for communicating (I mean these types of signing than natural ones).

The idea of "Time is Now" is really for strengthening dual language use and approaches in Deaf Ed and Deaf community everywhere.

Which film would look better with Deaf and Hoh people being fluent in one of or both languages enjoying cleaner channels of communication flowing throughout the community or this film?

This film has open captions, I'm not sure why it was uploaded or who uploaded it without captions-- will find out...

Good Points, Don G. I was thinking the same thing. Which is probably why this blog entry is not in DV. I was thinking, gosh, I wished it was captioned. Cuz then I'd learn some new cues or new foriegn signs.

A very good example why, in order to enable many to understand a video, it should be captioned, subtitled or at least provide a transcript.

When I clicked on that video film, I did not know what it was all about. Like, what in heck are you talking about???? The time is now...for what?

The point of the piece IMHO is a call to get past divisions, bias, and prejudices that we ALL have and realize that we are all just people and the "time is now" for all of us to work together to ensure excellence in educational opportunities for every child - Deaf and HH alike. Now I can't speak for Leeanne or H&V, but I am pretty sure this film is not meant to stand alone as any kind of statement, but it's meant to be used in context within a larger presentation where the concepts are expanded and discussed. As for captions - cmon, of course there are captions.
Here is a url to view some screen grabs - the open captioning is hard to capture since it is technically not embedded in the video...

Now is the time for you to learn
to speak in English.

Candy, Jodie happens to find this video clip on youtube and thought it is something to show. Karen is correct, I know it is captioned already.

I can see how this video footage can be confusing to some and not to others who just grasp it quickly to know enough what it is suggesting.

Joe said "Now I can't speak for Leeanne or H&V,"

LeAnne and your Joe are a long time family friend and a local here where I am at too. The publisher of H & V is Janet DesGeorge... : )

"....but I am pretty sure this film is not meant to stand alone as any kind of statement, but it's meant to be used in context within a larger presentation where the concepts are expanded and discussed."

This needs a further expansion on how too many options is really spreading us thin. Completely inclusiveness has its downfalls already seen in Deaf Education, Deaf and Hoh children, and individuals here and also everywhere, this need to be addressed and is now being so. It is to be seen.

We were all at the NHS 2008 Conference the past four days...see new blog!! *smile* Jodi
Isn't is such a small world???

As usual, me and my flying fingers. What I meant was that it was the type of videos that wouldn't make it in DV. I Knew it was captioned elsewhere before it landed here.

Love this! I can catch a few words here and there but Alex has taught me a couple cued signs and I could see them.

I just clicked on the video as well and didn't know what it was about. I thought it was very powerful but had no clue what the "idea" is.
