Hmm...Another Film Involving the CI-Deaf Community Controversy

Why can't anyone just make a nice, light, feel-good film with a character with cochlear implants??
Why does everything have to be so damn controversial?

At about 1:20, when visitors come to the village and promise that the CI will make their children "normal" is when it gets controversial.

There are far better ways to explain the CI than to expound on "normality". Here in this situation, it could result in poisoning a community's healthy acceptance of its deaf citizens with a false notion of normality being better.

Jodi-
I hear you on that. Sometimes the controversy just makes me tired (and frustrated)....but mainly tired. Especially on a Friday after a really long long week.

Like the guy at the end "God made you Deaf, accept it." How beautiful. How much more do we have to tell you? Accept us the way we are... Don't change us! We are happy. We are fine. We love the way we are. Why try to change us?? Leave us alone!
Stop the oppression!!!

If you have to ask the question Why does The CI have to be controversial, then you don't really understand how th eharignw orld infleucnes perceptions of deafness, and deaf people, and how it all feeds into this notion that to hear is normal, etc, etc, etc.... Dianrez already said it..... the CI is a tool, not manna from heaven, to hearing people perhaps, but.. I give up. I get sick of beating my head agaisnt the wall in so called debates with people who just WON'T get it, so.... I don't. I don't mean just here, but elsewhere in the deaf sphere.

It really is boring to hear stories about switching on, ten days to switch on, my miraculous implant, and so forth...

It is getting rather boring.. and contirbute snothignw hatsoever to bridging the gaps between deaf and Deaf and hearing people!

Dianrez already said it.....there are better ways to expound on the CI than rabbit out abt bullshit normality, and it can be done without belittleling Deaf people and deaf culture as some CI proponents do.

You know, the CI is just a tool, not manna from heaven, to hearing people perhaps, it's a miracle, but.. I give up.

I get sick of beating my head against the wall in so called debates with people who just WON'T get it, so.... I don't. I don't mean just here, but elsewhere in the deaf sphere.

It really is boring to hear stories about switching on, ten days to switch on, my miraculous implant, and so forth...

It is getting rather boring.. and contributes nothing whatsoever to bridging the gaps between deaf and Deaf and hearing people!

Mind you, I would say pretty much the same about hearing aids... and other assistive listening devices.

But Deaf and deaf debate is boring, there is no intelligent insight whatsoever, hence why I am not blogging much these days....

Hi Tony,
I can understand this:But Deaf and deaf debate is boring, there is no intelligent insight whatsoever, hence why I am not blogging much these days....
But I'm sorry you haven't been blogging lately, I like reading your insights...
In any case, I like reading about the life experiences moreso than the debates...but every now and then a good debate is okay. Everyone wants to be heard.

Dianrez- The "normality" thing bugged me, rubbed me wrong.

Anon- didn't even know my blog was picked up by dvdtv and I like deafread, I never tire of reading about the diverse experiences one lives as a deaf individual.

Loudest Mom- It's Monday:)

Anon 2- People can be Deaf, beautiful AND hear.
